Drifting solid organic matter in 2 particle size ranges (1.3-3.0 cm and 253 .mu.m-1.0 cm) was sampled continuously for 13 mo. at 2 stations on a permanent and an intermittent stream. Material collected each week was divided into recognizable fractions: green plants, coniferous, deciduous, algae, detrius and aquatic animals. Percent organic matter, percent Kjeldahl N and percent total P in the organic matter were determined on monthly bulked fraction samples. A large proportion of the annual solid organic matter transport occurred during the spring. Greater quantities of fine particles were transported than were particles of diameter 1.0-3.0 cm, with the detritus-algae fraction contributing the most. Proportional contributions of other fractions depended on upstream input, land use and very local conditions. Indications were that few large particles travel very far. Benthic invertebrates contributed little to total weight but provided a greater contribution to transport of nutrients. Nutrient content of coniferous and deciduous fractions varied little seasonally but the green and algae nutrient contents peaked in the autumn. Data on dissolved nutrient transport indicated that solid drift is insignificant in an intermittent stream.
