The seasonal occurrence and maturation of the acanthocephalan N. rutili in carp (C. carpio L.) is described on the basis of observations carried out in the Macha Lake pond system (the Elbe River basin) in Czechoslovakia in 1981-1982. Here the parasite exhibits an obvious annual maturation cycle when gravid egg-producing female acanthocephalans are present only in May. Carp acquire new N. rutili invasions from June until March of the next year, but mainly in autumn and early spring. The clear-cut seasonal cyclicity in the maturation and occurrence of N. rutili is induced principally by the temperature regime in the locality. Distinct correlation between N. rutili invasions and the body size (age) of carp was found.
