Seed borne fungi of some pearl millet cultivars

Seeds of pearl millet cultivars Hb-3, PHB-10, PHB-14 and CN-74 were tested by blotter paper and agar-plate methods for seed-borne pathogens. In all, 23 spp. of fungi belonging to 12 genera, Aspergillus, Drechslera, Curvularia, Fusarium, Penicillium, Alternaria, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Periconia, Phoma, Rhizoctonia and Syncephalastrum were isolated. Of these only 9 fungi were pathogenic while the rest were saprophytic in nature. D. australiensis, F. solani and R. bataticola were observed as pathogenic for the 1st time on the seeds. Difference in the seed-borne fungi of each cultivar were recorded.
