Selection against stress susceptibility in the styrian edelschwein herdbook population

To select against stress-susceptibility in the Styrian Edelschwein breeding population all young sows were first coupled with Pietrain boars and the farrows tested for halothane reaction. Although the halothane reaction shows a very low frequency of 1.45% in the population there is a significantly higher percentage of halothane positive animals in some breeding managements. By investigating the pedigrees farrows it was determined that certain specific boars appear very often in the pedigree of halothane positive reacting animals. Breeders should avoid buying boars or sows which have a pedigree in which ancestors with known halothane positive offspring appear.
