Selection among and within half sib families in opaque 2 maize zea mays populations
Two opaque-2 (o2) maize populations, IAC Maya o2, and IAC-1 o2, were subjected to 4 cycles of among and within half-sib family selection for grain yield. Response to selection was made on the base populations and on their intervarietal hybrid (IAC Phoenix o2). The observed genetic gains per cycle (linear regression coefficients) were 4.5%, 10.7% and 4.8% for IAC Maya o2, IAC-1 o2 and IAC Phoenix o2, respectively. The heterosis of the original populations was 34.8% relative to the mid-parent and 16.1% relative to the best parent. Heterosis did not change significantly after 4 cycles of selection. The last cycles of IAC Maya o2 and all cycles of the intervarietal hybrid surpassed the check double-cross IAC Hmd 7974. The potential of the base populations for intra- and interpopulation improvement was discussed. Changes in prolificacy, ear and plant height, lodging and number of damaged ears also were studied.
