Selection experiment with pigs for improvement of carcass composition

Selection experiment with pigs for improvement of carcass composition
In a selection experiment with pigs 2 lines were selected for 5 generations in opposite directions. Selection criterion was the lean-fat ratio taken on the live animal by ultrasonic measurement. In addition to these 2 purebred lines of German Landrace a synthetic line of German Landrace and Pietrain was selected for high lean-fat ratio. The selection response expected for performance testing of boars on station was realized in the breeding experiment. Selection for lean-fat ratio improved the proportion of lean cuts. Selection for lean-fat ratio did not influence growth performance. The unexpected result is discussed with regard to maintenance requirements and exploitation of energy for muscle and fat synthesis. The correlated response in reproductive traits was not significant. Realized heritability for the selection criterion was slightly higher in the synthetic line than in the purebred line selected for high lean-fat ratio; the difference was not significant.
