Selection indexes based on growth reproduction and production traits for indian buffaloes

The objectives of the present investigation were to construct several selection indexes involving traits of growth, reproduction and production, and to determine their relative efficiency in terms of total genetic economic gain. The cost of production per unit for each trait was Rs 1.16, 4.91, 4.37, 5.77, 2.20, 1.54, 1.40, 1.47 and 2.78 for weights at birth, 6 mo., 1 yr and at 1st calving, age at 1st calving, 1st service period, 1st calving interval, 1st lactation milk yield and lactation length respectively. Several selection indexes were constructed. Comparative study of relative efficiency indicated that selection index which incorporated birth weight, weight at 6 mo., weight at 1 yr, weight at 1st calving, 1st lactation milk yield and lactation length had the highest relative efficiency of 103.90%, than in the index based on all the 9 traits which was assumed to be 100% efficient. Index which included body weight at 6 mo., 1 yr and calving along with age at 1st calving, 1st lactation milk yield and lactation length was 101.35% efficient. Sequentional selection for improvement in Indian buffaloes might be used. Reproductive traits should be improved by better management and sexual health control.
