Selection of citric acid producing strains of aspergillus niger

Several strains of A. niger were studied with regard to their fermentative capability; the experiments were carried out with surface cultivation of the mold in Pyrex Glass trays. Ten out of the isolated strains were fementative; the maximum yield coefficients were observed when the initial sucrose concentration was 100 gl-1. The optimal initial pH values for production varied according to the strain of A. niger. Strain A1 showed a maximum yield for 78% (based on the substrate) when initial pH was 6.0; the best fermentation for strain A10 was at pH 3.0 with a 43% yield.
