Tetrasporophytic plants, producing .lambda.-carrageenan, were selected from cultivated narrow forms and from natural population of C. crispus. Some remained infertile over 6 yr in unialgal culture. Such strains are particularly suitable for production of .lambda.-carrageenan in aquaculture systems.
