Severity of rice blast bacterial blight and sheath blight in rice after application with herbicides and insecticides

Two herbicides and 2 insecticides were tested for their effect on the development of bacterial blight [Xanthomonas oryzae], leaf blast [Pyricularia oryzae] and sheath blight [Rhizoctonia solani] on some recommended rice varieties. MCPA [2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid] decreased bacterial blight severity on 'IR-28' and TKM 6. The severity of blast infection was increased by MIPC [2-isopropylphenyl N-methyl carbamate] on IR-5, C-22, IR-20, IR-1561, IR-1330, IR-1487, C4-63G and C4-137 while 2,4-D, MCPA and monocrotophos did not alter disease development. The sheath blight was not affected by the chemical treatments. Based on their lumped effect, MCPA and 2,4-D reduced severity of bacterial blight while monocrotophos and MIPC apparently predisposed rice plants to rice blast.
