Sexual characteristics of margaritifera margaritifera populations in central new england usa

Populations of M. margaritifera in Europe are made up of dioecious individuals with only occasional hermaphrodites present. Studies on North American species suggest that M. falcata can be either dioecious or hermaphroditic. M. margaritifera inhabiting central New England [USA] is wholly dioecious. Histological examination of serial gonadal sections taken from specimens representing 13 populations in central New England, sampled at different time intervals, indicates that all adult individuals participate in the late summer-fall recruitment cycle. During this period, rhythmic sex reversals probably do not occur. Recognizable males are present about 2 yr before females, while both males and females do not fully mature reproductively until nearly halfway through their lifespan. In a single population studied, mature females are 23% more abundant than mature males, although males are equally abundant throughout the middle to older age classes.
