Sexual dimorphism of the rock sandpiper calidris ptilocnemis aves charadriidae

Sexual dimorphism of the rock sandpiper calidris ptilocnemis aves charadriidae

Zoologicheskii Zhurnal 61(7): 1110-1113

Marked sexual differences in adult rock sandpipers (C. p. tschuktschorum) were revealed by means of comparative analysis of the morphometric indices, weight and plumage color in the nest range on the Chukot Peninsula [USSR]. Most birds can be sexed by the breeding plumage color. The bill length allows sexing of 87% of the sandpipers. The body weight changes markeldy during the breeding period and helps to separate males and females mainly in June when the weights of 84.8% of birds do not overlap.
