Sexual imprinting of a barn owl tyto alba on humans

Sexual imprinting of a barn owl tyto alba on humans

Great Basin Naturalist 36(3): 385

The bird had no intraspecific contacts after it was acquired by the zoo and was hand fed and handled by a human from its acquisition date. Presumably, the owl as a chick had had considerable interactions with its parents and perhaps siblings during the 1st wk of its life. Early parental exposure, for a precocial species, would have insured the release of sexual behavior only in response to an appropriate stimulus object. Apparently the barn owl, being nidicolous, had a longer and/or later critical period to learn its sexual releaser.
