Since 1981 following the increase in the acreage of high yielding rice cultivars, 'Amol-2' and 'Amo-3', high infections of sheath blight disease was observed on these cultivars in some parts of Mazandaran Province. Severity of infection in 1982 was so high that symptoms of the disease could be observed commonly on flag leaves, leaves and ears, and sclerotia of the causal organism were formed abundantly on the surface of the grains. Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn was the causal organism of this disease. Greenhouse and field experiments showed that local rice cultivars such as 'Moosatarom', 'Dadras', 'Salari' and 'Ghashangheh' are tolerant while 'Amol-2'; 'Amol-3' and 'Mesbah' are susceptible.
