Soil compaction effects on nitrogen use in tall fescue festuca arundinacea cultivar kentucky 31

Tall fescue (F. arundinacea Schreb. 'Kentucky 31') was subjected to 3 compaction treatments with 2 nitrogen levels. Increasing compaction increased bulk density, water retention and soil strength while aeration porosity decreased. Visual quality, clipping yield, N use per unit soil area and root growth declined as compaction increased. Compaction reduced percent N recovery by 10-31% compared to uncompacted plots. Visual quality, clipping yield, percent N in leaf tissue and N uptake increased with increasing N rates, but percent N recovery declined. Total nonstructural carbohydrates were unaffected. The high N rate with compaction had a detrimental effect on root growth.
