Soluble solid and sugar contents in pressed juice of stalk of sweet sorghum sorghum bicolor as affected by deheading

A hybrid sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) cultivar, 'Sucrosorgo 301', was cultivated to examine the effect of deheading on the soluble solid, fructose, glucose and sucrose contents of stalks. Plants were deheaded in the heading stage of development. Deheaded plants showed higher contents in soluble solid and sucrose and sucrose ratio [(sucrose content/soluble solid content).times.100], and lower contents in fructose and glucose than normal plants. The sucrose ratios of pressed juice of some deheaded plants exceeded 80%.
