Sources of resistance to loose smut in bread wheat triticum aestivum macaroni wheat triticum durum and triticum dicoccum emmer wheat

A germplasm collection consisting of 439 varieties of Triticum aestivum Linn. emend. Fiori and Paol., 13 of T. durum Desf. and 2 of T. dicoccum Schubl. from India, Canada and the USA were evaluated for their resistance to a mixture of races of loose-smut caused by Ustilago tritici (Pers.) Rostr. The commonly cultivated 'HD 2009', 'WH 147' 'WL 711', 'Sonalika', 'Kalyan Sona' and 'WL 1562' were found to be susceptible. Ten out of the 13 varieties of T. durum and both the varieties of T. dicoccum wheats were resistant. The susceptibility of 3 varieties of T. durum indicated the prevalence of races virulent on macaroni wheats.
