Spawning of the round goby gobius melanostomus in aquarium conditions during the winter

Spawning of the round goby gobius melanostomus in aquarium conditions during the winter

Voprosy Ikhtiologii 18(4): 777-779

To test the capacity of the round goby G. melanostomus for year-round spawning, gobies were held in aquarium conditions throughout the winter with conditions of prolonged daytime illumination, maintenance of spawning temperatures and absence of stimulating hormonal effects. Within 2 days after planting (Oct. 21-22) the fish began to feed and began nesting behavior within 1 wk. Spawning began in Dec. with irregular repetitions continuing for 7 mo. The basic factor affecting the reproductive system of the gobies and inducing wintertime spawning was water temperature. Fingerlings emerging from the eggs were normal, indicating the physiological completeness of the spawnings and confirming the potential capacity of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal and sexual system of the round goby to regulate development and realization of sex cells in the course of the entire year.
