Specificity of the interaction between phenyl methane dyes and bacteria

Products of metabolism from bacteria interact with the chromophore of di- and tri-phenylmethane dyes and produce leucodyes. Seven different strains of gram-negative bacteria decolorize solutions of Brilliant green, para-Rosanalin and Crystal violet. This decolorization of dyes was not due to standard reduction activities since Methylene blue was not reduced in these tests.
