Spectral characteristics of eggs in some fish species
Light absorption spectra were studied in live eggs of the following 12 species belonging to 5 ecological groups: Platichthys flesus, Liopsetta glacialis, Limanda limanda, Gadus morhua, Eleginus navaga, Boreogadus saida (pelagophilous group), Misgurnus fossilis, Clupea pallasi marisalbi (phytophilous group); Gasterosteus aculeatus (phytophilous-nesting group), Cyclopterus lumpus, Anarhichas lupus (lithophilous-nesting group), Salmo salar (lithophilous-burying group). The contribution of carotenoids to the formation of egg color varied with each species. The visual determination of carotenoid content by egg color was difficult due to such physical factors as egg size, the size of the perivitelline space, differences in yolk structuralization, membrane transparency and other factors. Egg color used in the literature in evaluating carotenoid content is a very unreliable criterion.
