Spectral correlation analysis of the electro encephalogram of children under normal conditions and during retardation of psychic development

Multiple spectra-correlation analysis of the EEG of healthy children and children with retarded psychic development (RPD) made it possible to detect significant differences in the functional organization of the brain. Comparison of middle-group EEG parameters showed the structural-functional immaturity of the brain in children with RPD in comparison with normal children. Parameters studied in evaluating of spectral and coherent functions of the EEG of children with RPD made it possible not only to establish differences from the norm, but also to evaluate features of brain functioning in groups of children revealed to have a severe defect by neuropsychological methods. Such features are observed both in the organization of a resting EEG and especially in formation of functional systems of the brain in the process of attention and intellectual activity. The studied groups of children with RPD, differentiated with respect to clinico-neuropsychological parameters, differed with respect to degree of formation of rhythmogenic thalamocortical mechanism, and also systems of general and especially local activation of cortical structures during various types of activity.
