Spectrodensitometric thin layer chromatography scanning in the determination of sichuan zhu jie ginseng sapogenins
Zhu-jie-ginseng, the root of Panax japonicus, a Chinese traditional crude drug, has been long used as an analgesic and hemostatic. Zhu-jie-ginseng is mainly produced in Sichuan [China]. The major components of Zhu-jie-ginseng include 4 types of sapogenins. The results of spectrodensitometric TLC [thin layer chromatography] determination of the sapogenin constituents are as follos: oleanolic acid type (90.5%); 20-s-proto-panaxadiol type (2.4%), 20-s-proto-panaxatriol type (5.2%), 3.beta., 6.alpha., 12.beta., 25-tetrahydroxyl-(20s, 24R)-epoxyldammarane type (1.8%). The predominance of the oleanolic acid type coincide with the results of the analysis of Zhu-jie-ginseng grown in Japan. In Sichuan, the percentage of panaxatriol type (5.2%) is higher than that of panaxadiol type (2.4%). The presence of sapogenins was confirmed, these differ from the reports on Japanese Zhu-jie-ginseng. The simplicity and precision of spectrodensitometric TLC scanning in the analysis of crude drugs was confirmed.
