Spectrophotometric determination of 4 nitroaniline using n 1 naphthyl ethylenediamine dihydrochloride in parts per million level

The method describes the determination of 4-nitroaniline (PNA) in which PNA is diazotised with sodium nitrite in the presence of hydrochloric acid and subsequently coupled with N(1-naphthyl) ethylene diamine dihydrochloride (NEDA) in acid medium. The absorbance of the purple colored dye so formed is measured at 545 nm. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity are 6.6 .times. 104 l .cntdot. mol-1 cm11 and 0.0021 .mu.g cm-2 respectively. Several common interferents like phenols, nitro compounds, aldehydes, benzene, ketones, etc. present in polluted water do not interfere. On the other hand, primary aromatic amines when present in high concentrations interfere.
