Spectrophotometric determination of total gossypol in cottonseeds and cottonseed meals
A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of total gossypol content in cottonseeds and cottonseed meals was developed. The method was based on the reaction of gossypol with 3-amino-1-propanol an its subsequent complexation with Fe(III). The green colored Fe(III)-bis-(aminopropanol)-gossypol complex had a characteristic absorption maximum at 620 nm. The colored system obeyed Beer's law in the concentration range of 4-80 ppm gossypol. The effects of several experimental variables on the determination of gossypol were studied and the stolchlometric composition of the complex was determined. The new method was simple, rapid and precise and yielded results comparable with the standard AOCS [American Oil Chemists' Society] method. The method was applied for the determination of total gossypol in several cottonseed and cottonseed meal samples.
