Spore morphometry and the taxonomy of the genus agaricus

Spore morphometry and the taxonomy of the genus agaricus

Ukrayins'kyi Botanichnyi Zhurnal 33(3): 246-251

Taxonomic significance of Agaricus characters is established. Morphological, anatomical, cultural and physiologico-biochemical characters number 43. Variation of spore sizes is studied with the subsequent treatment in 54 spp. of Agaricus from the northern hemisphere. Sample exsiccates from different geographical zones are investigated. A new stable, important index, Km, the ratio of the spore length to its width, is introduced; it is called an index of the evolutionary advance of the species. Round spores are considered more primitive and species with smaller Km prove to be more ancient in evolutionary respect than those with the larger Km. The character of the distribution area, species quantity, development type, trama structure, intraspecies variability character, etc. are taken into account. On the basis of a biometric analysis of spores, a new system of Agaricus is suggested containing 4 subgenera, 10 sections, 4 subsections and 10 series. A key is given for determination of the intrageneric taxons of Agaricus.
