Abstract
In the region around Scicli (Ragusa, Sicily) the outcropping lithostratigraphic sequence shows an underlying limestone complex grading without nonconformities to a marly complex covered by transgressive Pleistocene sediments. The biostratigraphic sequence shows that in the region around Scicli a mainly normal marine sedimentation occurred in the Messinian. The upper part of the Messinian whitish marls is on the whole to be referred to a regressive sequence with only one point of restricted marine environment perhaps with little evaporitic sedimentation, followed again by conditions of open sea, near the coast.
