Studies of the feeding value of some commercial trout feeds and replacing a major part of fish meal by krill meal in trout feed

Studies of the feeding value of some commercial trout feeds and replacing a major part of fish meal by krill meal in trout feed

Archiv fuer Fischereiwissenschaft 28(1): 19-30

Eight commercial trout feeds were each fed to groups of 1200 and 900 trout in ponds (average initial weights were 108 and 159 g, respectively). Protein contents of the feeds ranged between 39 and 55% of the dry matter. During 114 feeding days 350 kg feed were supplied to ponds with smaller trout and 385 kg feed to ponds with bigger trout. Gains per Mcal gross energy ranged between 142 and 167 g with no obvious influence of the level of protein in the feed. Between 1.54 and 2.20 g live weight were gained per g of dietary protein, the greatest value corresponding to the lowest level of protein in the feed (39.2% of dry matter). In a 2nd experiment 2000 trout with an average initial weight of 103 g were kept in each of 4 ponds. To 2 of the ponds a feed was supplied containing 50% fish meal and 13% carcass meal. The feed of the other 2 ponds contained 17.5% fish meal, 7.5% carcass meal and 40% krill meal. From representative samples of feed and trout both at the beginning and the end of the experiment balances were calculated for dietary energy and protein. Thirty-five and 37% of the gross energy of the 2 diets were recovered in the gain and 33.5 and 34.6% of the dietary protein.
