Studies of the growth of promising clones of populus alba

The growth of 29 clones of white poplar from the preliminary variety test on carbonate chernozem near the Vardim village, Veliko Tirnovo district [USSR] was studied. In some of the clones straight boledness is preserved which is characteristic of the maternal trees. Some are characterized by good growth in height and diameter. They manifest certain advantages with respect to the intensity of the photosynthesis over the euramerican poplars. The selected trees from the white poplar may serve as a base for selection of highly productive clones.
