The modified fractionation of cattle lens cortex .gamma.-crystallin, which is associated with carbohydrate, was carried out by phenol-sulfuric acid reaction followed by gel filtration and ionic exchange DEAE and SP-Sephadex column chromatographies. Two major protein fractions, II and III were followed by fraction I and 6 minor fractions all showed positive PAS [periodic acid-Schiff] reaction on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The minor fraction clearly demonstrated positive PAS protein bands; these corresponded to the major protein bands of fraction II and III.
