Studies on humic acids decomposing streptomycetes 3. synthesis of amino acids and organic acids during humic acids decomposition

Twenty-eight species of the genus Streptomyces were tested for their ability to produce amino acids and organic acids in liquid medium, containing humic acids as the sole source of C. Many of the 12 amino acids initially found in humic acids were completely assimilated by the growing organisms within 1 mo., but they were detected again in the culture filtrate in the following periods. The 11 amino acids, initially not present in humic acids, were synthesized by one or more of the test organisms. Five isolates produced 3-5, 1 isolate produced all the 11, and the remaining 22 isolates produced 6-10 amino acids. Seven organic acids, other than those naturally present in the humic acids, were produced by one or more of the test organisms. Eight more unknown acids were detected in the culture filtrate of 10 isolates.
