X. malvacearum (E. F. Sm.) Dowson, cultured on pectin peptone medium, produced a toxic metabolite. The toxin plasmolyzed potato tissue, inhibited spore and seed germination, caused wilting of seedlings and formed chlorotic brown spots on leaves of different plants. The toxic metabolite was thermostable and non-specific. It caused similar symptoms on cotton [Gossypium hirsutum] leaves as that by the pathogen, suggesting that it plays a definite role in pathogenesis.
