The behavior of M2 of 'Calland' and 'Hampton' soybean cultivars treated with different doses of .gamma.-rays (2.5-40 kr) or EMS [ethylmethane sulfonate] (0.1-1.5%) was investigated. EMS surpassed .gamma.-rays in inducing chlorophyll mutations albina, xantha, chlorina for both mutagens plus variegated for EMS. The frequencies of these mutations were on top when using 15 kr .gamma.-rays or 0.6% EMS for both cultivars. Mutations recorded in M2 were dwarf, giant, heavy branching, high yield, early maturing, late maturing, sterile plants and large seeds. Increase in the dose of both mutagens was accompanied by a decline in the length of main stem, the number of pods and weight of seeds per plant. Coefficient of variation increased with mutagen dose. The number of lateral branches was not affected.
