Mutations obtained in M2 were studied as M3 and their coefficient of variation [C.V.] was defined. The mutagenic doses causing the least C.V. were 10-20 KR .gamma.-rays and 0.4-0.8% EMS. The dwarf mutants of both cultivars showed an increment in total lipids and at the same time a decrease in the crude protein content. The heavy branching mutant in 'Hampton' had more seed yield per plant, reaching up to 58%. The high yield mutants achieved an increase in seed yield ranging 40-74% for 'Calland' and 14-38% for 'Hampton'. The early mutants matured 8-12 days earlier in 'Calland' and 4-13 days in 'Hampton'. The late maturing mutant of 'Calland' (up to 13 days late) produced high crude protein content in the seeds at the expense of the total lipids content. The large seeds mutant (up to 37% extra weight) showed a higher content of total carbohydrates and a lower content in crude protein. The amino acid content (essential and nonessential) for the different mutants similarly behaved as the crude protein content. The dwarf mutant had short epidermal cells and pith with flattened cells.
