Studies on nutritional levels and blood characteristics in women living in the area of the kitakami mountain system japan

A relationship between nutrient intake and blood characteristics was investigated in 70 females (30-65 yr old) living in Kawai village, Iwate prefecture [Japan]. Compared to the Japanese recommended dietary allowances, the intake of all nutrients was estimated to be generally lower; vitamins A and B2 were under 50%, followed by fat, Ca and vitamin B1. The status of protein intake was sufficient in quantity but inferior in quality. The intake of high protein food should be increased. The mean values of hematocrit, Hb, serum Fe, protein, albumin, A[albumin]/G[globulin] ratio, cholesterol and triglyceride were 39.2 .+-. 2.6%, 12.7 .+-. 1.4 g/dl, 84.5 .+-. 30.4 .mu.g/dl, 7.2 .+-. 0.6 g/dl, 4.2 .+-. 0.3 g/dl, 1.4 .+-. 0.5, 167.5 .+-. 33.0 mg/dl and 92.8 .+-. 63.1 mg/dl, respectively. The frequency of anemia determined by hematocrit (< 36%) and Hb (< 12.0 g/dl) was 28.6% in females surveyed. No statistically significant difference in the nutrient intake was observed between the anemic group and the normal one. The serum Fe concentration in the anemic group was significantly lower than that in the normal group. The nutritional factor causing anemia among females in the mountain village was mainly the low intake of Fe. The frequency of hypertension determined by systolic blood pressure > 150 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg was 32.9% in the subjects. Nutrient intake and blood characteristics of hypertensive subjects were not significantly different from those of normotensives.
