Studies on pharyngostomum cordatum 1. the 1st intermediate host in japan

Studies on pharyngostomum cordatum 1. the 1st intermediate host in japan

Japanese Journal of Parasitology 28(4): 235-240

To determine the 1st intermediate host of P. cordatum in Japan, experimental infections of Polypylis hemisphaerula with the miracidia of the fluke were performed. The snails were examined 25-28 days after exposure, and 9 of 11 snails (81.8%) and 33 of 40 (82.5%) harbored cercariae of the fluke. P. hemisphaerula was easily infected with P. cordatum, producing the cercariae. The life cycle of P. cordatum was studied in detail by Wallace (1939); In the description of the cercariae, 7 sensory hairs projecting from the sides of the tail stem were described. The present study reported that the tail was provided with 13 pairs of hairs and the body with 1 pair.
