Studies on the amphibian helminths in japan part 5 metacercariae of a feline intestinal fluke pharyngostomum cordatum in amphibian and reptilian hosts from kagawa prefecture

Studies on the amphibian helminths in japan part 5 metacercariae of a feline intestinal fluke pharyngostomum cordatum in amphibian and reptilian hosts from kagawa prefecture

Japanese Journal of Parasitology 26(6): 384-387

The helminths of amphibians and reptilians at Okawa, Shionoe, Shido, Sangawa, Miki, and Nagao in Kagawa Prefecture Shikoku island [Japan] were surveyed. Rana nigromaculata, R. rugosa, R. brevipoda, R. catesbeiana, R. ornativentris, R. japonica, R. limnocalis, Hyla arborea japonica, Rhacophorus buergeri, Triturus pyrrhogaster, Rhabdophis tigrinus tigrinus and Elaphe quadrivirgata were examined. R. nigromaculata, R. rugosa, R. brevipoda, R. catesbeiana and R. limnocalis harbored metacercariae of a feline intestinal trematode P. cordatum, under the subserosa of the intestine, but no metacercariae were detected from newts. The infection rate was high in R. nigromaculata and R. catesbeiana especially; the number of metacercariae ranged from 2-15 in each of the frogs. The snakes also harbored the metacercariae, their number being 13-45. The snakes seem to act as the paratenic hosts of the feline trematode. R. catesbeiana, R. limnocalis, E. quadrivirgata and R. tigrinus tigrinus are new intermediate or paratenic hosts of P. cordatum.
