Studies on the humus forms of forest soils part 3 elementary composition of fractionated horizons of forest soils

Each fraction separated physically from each horizon of 5 forest soils were analyzed. The biggest fraction was Lf1 (fresh litter) in L layers, Ff1 (> 2 mm) for Ff2 (2-1 mm) in F layers and Hf6 in H layers. Of all the changes in various parameters which accompanied decomposition and humification, the change in C/N ratio was the most obvious; the C/N ratio for plant remains decreased to 25 or 30 during decomposition; further decrease in this value hardly occurred. Hf7 and Hf8 were fairly different materials from the other fractions. In the A horizons, C and N contents increased and C/N ratios decreased in the order of sand, silt and clay fractions.
