Studies on the inheritance of kernel size and its association with physical and chemical quality characters in rice oryza sativa

The inheritance of kernel size and its association wiht hulling recovery, milling recovery, water uptake, kernel elongation during cooking and alkali digestion value was investigated in the segregating generations of six crosses. T-3 .times. T(N)1, Hansraj .times. T(N)1, Govind .times. Tilakchandan, IR 24 .times. Thapachini, Govind .times. Thapachini and Thapachini .times. T(N)1. These six crosses were classified into three groups according to the kernel size of the parental varieties, long .times. short, long .times. medium and medium .times. short. The long kernel was dominant over the medium and short, whereas medium kernel was dominant over the short. The kernel size was found to be governed by single locus designated as Gl with three alleles Gl1, Gl2 and gl (multiple allelic series). The allelic relationship was Gl1 > Gl2 > gl. The kernel size was found to associated with hulling recovery, milling recovery and water uptake. Moreover long kernel rices had low hulling and milling recovery as compared to short kernel rices but had high water uptake. Kernel size was observed to be independent of kernel elongation during cooking at 82.degree. C and alkali digestion value.
