Studies on the pattern of growth of developing cultivar kalipatti sapota manilkara achras fruit

Studies on the pattern of growth of developing cultivar kalipatti sapota manilkara achras fruit

Journal of Maharashtra Agricultural Universities 4(1): 55-60

A study on the periodical changes in the fresh weight of developing 'Kalipatti' sapota fruit showed that the fruit followed a double sigmoid pattern of growth. There were 2 periods of active growth, Stage I and Stage III, separated by a period of retarded growth, Stage II (lag phase). The Stage I (1st-12th fortnight) of fruit growth accounted for 23.6% of total weight of fruit attained at maturity, while Stage II accounted for only 14.4%. The Stage III (17th-21st fortnight) accounted for maximum amount of growth (62%) as measured in terms of fresh weight increase. The statistical and graphical analyses of data confirmed the double sigmoid nature of growth curve. The fruit took about 10 1/2 mo. from set to attain maturity under Dharwar [India] conditions. The unduly long period could be attributed to 2 mo. of lag phase and very slow growth rates in the initial stages of fruit development.
