The replication of 2 cytopathic and 1 noncytopathic strains of BVD [bovine viral diarrhia virus] virus in bovine embryonic lung cells was investigated by ultrahistology. Enveloped virus particles with electron dense cores and an average size of 55 nm developing near the nucleus as well as in other regions of the cytoplasm, especially in regions with enriched rough endoplasmatic reticulum and in cisternae, were seen in cells infected with cytopathic strains. Formation of envelopes by budding through intraplasmatic membranes could not be found. Small and very large vacuoles limited by rough and smooth endoplasmatic reticulum and containing single mature virus particles predominated in the cytoplasm of infected cells some hours later. Such cells are degenerated and become lytic. Bovine embryonic lung cells persistently infected with noncytopathic virus strains showed only little degeneration. Isolated, enveloped virus particles as described above were found in small and large vesicles and only rarely in small vacuoles near the nucleus. The formation of intraplasmatic vacuoles was less distinct than in systems with cytopathic viruses and mostly limited to a few cells.
