Studies on the tissue culture of swertia japonica part 2 a comparison of constituents between callus cultures and the various organs of original plant

The contents of bitter glycoside, C-glycosylflavone and oleanolic acid in the callus cultures and various organs of S. japonica were quantitatively studied. None of those compounds were detected in the callus cultures. No bitter glycosides except amarogetin was found in the root. The scopoletin and its glycoside contents in the callus cultures based on dry weight were 0.07 .mu.M/g and 0.391 .mu.M/g, respectively. Fatty acids contituting simple lipids and phytosterols (.beta.-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol) were greater in quantity in the callus cultures grown on the medium containing 1-naphthaleneacetic acid.
