A 5 .times. 3 .times. 3 factorial design was used to know effects of urea levels (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%, W/dry W), moisture contents in the rice straw (15, 30 and 45%) and treatment periods (2, 4 and 8 wks) on chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility (DDM) of the urea-ammonia treated rice straw. The chopped and treated rice straw was stocked in a small polyethylene bag. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Increased urea levels resulted in decreased (P < .01) cell wall constituents (CWC) of the rice straw and increased (P < .01) in vitro DM digestibility. 2. Increased moisture levels in the rice straw increased (P < .01) in vitro DDM, but did not significantly influence on CWC contents. 3. Increased treatment period appeared in increased (P < .05) CWC content and in vitro DDM. 4. There appeared interactions among factors on chemical compositions and in vitro DDM except between moisture levels and treatment periods of the in vitro DDM.
