Study of carriers of foot and mouth disease virus in the north of choco colombia preliminary report

Study of carriers of foot and mouth disease virus in the north of choco colombia preliminary report

Revista del Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario 13(2): 411-416

Serologic reactors to antigen VIA in 1216 bovines on 3 farms of Area 1 (northern Choco) were studied. Of the animals, 9% were reactors. Specimens of esophagopharyngeal fluid that were negative for foot-and-mouth disease virus did not prove freedom from the carrier state if the animals were previously in contact with the natural disease or if they received repeated vaccinations in the remote past when the vaccines used were insufficiently inactivated. Distribution by age groups showed presence of such reactors in animals more than 4 yr old, after which the percentage of carriers increased with age and number of vaccinations. The importance of recognizing carriers in areas free of clinical infection is discussed and use of serologic methods for detecting such carriers is emphasized.
