Study of populations of diplopods in 6 forest associations of the jura and the swiss plateau region of neuchatel

Study of populations of diplopods in 6 forest associations of the jura and the swiss plateau region of neuchatel

Bulletin de la Societe Neuchateloise des Sciences Naturelles 104: 89-106

Diplopoda communities were studied in 1977 and 1978 in 6 forest associations from the hill stage to the high mountain stage (climax forest: Asperulo-Fagetum, Carici Fagetum, Abieti-Fagetum, Aceri-Fagetum; edaphic climax: Alno-Fraxinetum, Coronillo-Quercetum). The sampling was carried out with Tullgren extractors, Barber traps and direct catch under boards of wood. Three of the 26 spp. recorded are new for the the Swiss fauna (Geoglomeris jurassica, Halleinosoma noricum and Microchordeuma scutellare). The density of individuals was highest in both edaphic climaxes [246 and 227 ind (individuals)/m2] and lowest in the lowland beech forest (33 ind/m2). The most varied fauna (20 spp.) was found in the Coronillo-Quercetum, while both plain habitats only held 10 and 11 spp. Correspondence factor analysis revealed 3 groups of characteristic species: alluvial forest group, dry thermophilous forest group and mountain forest group. According to these observations and to the presently known ecological requirements of Diplopoda, humidity seems to be a principal factor determining distribution of species.
