We have studied the effects of flubendazole on the preadult and adult phases of four species of Trichinella (T. spiralis, T. nelsoni, T. nativa and T. pseudospiralis). It was observed that flubendazole has a greater activity against preadults, reducing their number in nearly 100% with only one 100 mg/kg dose given on the first day postinfection (except T. nativa, in which the reduction is of only 82%). As for the adult phase (treatment with one 100 mg/kg dose on the 6th day postinfection), the reduction in the number of nematodes was of only 36-67%. This seems to confirm that the sensitivity to benzimidazoles changes during the enteric cycle of this parasite.
