From 1968-1980 the dependence of the virus-carrying capacity of Ixodes persulcatus on the density of the ticks collected on undrained and drained territories of the Novgorod region was studied. The threshold density of adult I. persulcatus (> 25-30 specimens per flag-h) was stated for the forest zone of the northwestern region of the USSR below which the circulation of the tick encephalitis virus was apparently not observed. Such density was noted from 1977-1980 only on drained territories.
