Collagen being the main structural protein of the skin, the influence of a face cream containing this molecule was studied in the dermis using differential scanning calorimetry. This method, using samples of rat dermis, gives curves from which the denaturation temperature and enthalpy change of the collagen fiber network can be followed. The study was made using 2 groups of rats which were treated by the cream (or placebo) during 4 mo. (5 days a wk), and were aged 5 and 9 mo. at the end of the treatment. The collagen of the 5-mo.-old rats treated from mo. 1-5 with a collagen-containing cream showed a reduction of C of the temperature at the end of collagen denaturation compared with placebo-treated rats. Of the 3 peaks of the thermogram 1 showed a similar significant reduction in enthalpy. On the other hand these parameters were not modified for the 9-mo.-old rat (treated from 5-9 mo.). The age-related changes of these parameters, measured in previous work, show that the collagen cream treatment in growing rat (5-mo.-old) causes an alteration of the thermal properties of collagen fibers. Similar results were obtained with control rats aged 3 mo. These alterations are not discernible with older fully grown rats (9-mo.-old). The noted differences can result from alterations of the structure of the collagen fiber network and/or of the nature and the content of the intermolecular cross-links.
