Study on the life of pharyngostomum cordatum part 1 the 2nd intermediate host in japan and experimental infection to the final host

Japanese Journal of Parasitology 25(4): 241-246

To determine the 2nd intermediate host of the trematode P. cordatum in Japan amphibians and reptiles from Osaka and Kyoto prefectures were examined. Metacercariae were found in the muscle and connective tissues of hind legs Rana nigromaculata, R. brevipoda and R. rugosa from Osaka Prefecture; the first 2 spp. are new intermediate hosts of P. cordatum. Experimental oral infection of 2 adult cats, 4 kittens and 3 puppies with known numbers of metacercariae was performed. Of those animals, 2 adult cats, 2 kittens and 1 puppy began to expel ova in their feces 28-34 days after infection. At autopsy many adult worms were found in the upper small intestine of those animals. Morphological study and measurements on the metacercaria and the adult worm are reported.
