Four pyrethroids: deltamethrin, bioallethrin, cypermethrin and fenvalerate have been tested for their antiplasmodic activity. Experiments are made on adult females of Anopheles stephensi infected by Plasmodium yoelii yoelii by pulverisation with a Porter tower. Each insecticide is used at sublethal doses (mortality is in between 12 and 50%). After two weeks, dissections are made and the plasmodial infection rate is evaluated more by the presence of sporozoites in the salivary glands than by that of oocysts on the external side of the stomach wall. As a result, this infection rate was somewhat lower in tested batches by deltamethrin, bioallethrin and fenvalerate than in control batches and tested batches by cypermethrin. Two hypotheses are established to explain this result: it may be either a direct effect of these pyrethorids on the parasite making him unable to continue his life or an indirect effect on mosquitoes which, owing to physiological perturbations binded to intoxication by insecticides, would block the evolution of the cycle.
