Suppression of the pituitary growth hormone synthesis in rats bearing a transplantable pituitary tumor secreting large amounts of acth and prolactin

The effect of high plasma prolactin concentration upon the synthesis and concentration of pituitary prolactin and growth hormone (GH) was studied on rats bearing a transplantable pituitary mammotropic tumor which produces large quantities of biologically active prolactin and ACTH. In tumor bearing rats, pituitary prolactin concentration was decreased by 67% and that of GH by 33%, and the synthesis of these hormones was decreased by 74% and 42%, respectively. Since the inhibitory effect of ACTH upon the concentration and synthesis of pituitary GH was ruled out, the results suggest that high plasma prolactin concentration might suppress pituitary concentration and synthesis of prolactin and GH. The alternative explanation would be that biologically inactive GH could suppress GH synthesis by feedback inhibition.
